お酒と音楽がある
メロウな時の流れ方。

ふたりの心は、切実に森の家を求めていた。Iさん夫妻はともども東京での仕事が忙しく、気軽にリフレッシュできる場が欲しかった。この「気軽に」というのがふたりにとっては大切で、旅行に出かけるとなると宿の予約など、どうしても前もっての段取りが必要になる。対して森の家であれば、朝起きて「行く？」と思い立ったその場ですぐさま準備、昼前には到着、なんてこともかなう。

とりわけ夫は音楽とお酒を嗜み、自然のすぐそばで、それらにどっぷりと浸ることを夢見ていた。料理をちょこちょこと作りながら、とりとめもないことをあれこれと語らいながら、美しく良質な音に心震わせながら、深い夜まで、心おきなく過ごす夢を。

モリノイエの建築デザイナーにも、そのようなことを伝えた。するとキッチンとカウンターが一体型になったデザインを提案された。テーブルはキッチンを取り囲むように丸みを帯び、ともにいる相手と自然と目が合うようになっていた。そしてキッチンの上部には、律儀にスピーカーを置くための棚まで設けられていた。

夢は現実となった。

最初の頃はうれしくて、毎週のように通った。季節は夏より、むしろ冬が多い。しかも雪が降っているともなれば、「行く？」の確率はぐっと上がる。到着して、「今日はもう出かけない」と決め込むと、窓からの雪景色をじっと眺めていることもしばしばあった。またこのレイアウトのよいところは「作りながら」だけでなく「片付けながら食べたり飲んだりできる」こと。器をそのままにせずどんどん洗い、最後に酒とつまみだけを残しておく。東京の家だとテーブルとキッチンが離れているのでおっくうだが、森の家なら近いので気軽だ。あとはやはり、せっかくならいいシチュエーションで過ごしたいという理由は大きい。最後にグラスだけをパパッと片付けて、すぐに眠りにつくこともできる。

のっけは妻も付き合って、映画なんかを一緒に観たりしているが、たいてい最後は夫がひとり取り残される。濃密な闇に包まれる中、アナログレコードに針を落とす時のパチパチッという音と、薪ストーブの爆ぜるパチパチッという音が混じり合う。本のページをめくりながら、何となくそこにただいて、時おりグラスを傾ける。

夫はその時間が、孤独だけど嫌いではなかった。

The Mellow Passing of Time with Wine and Music.

This couple desperately desired a home in the forest. They both were busy with work in Tokyo and wanted a place where they could easily refresh themselves. The “easily” part was important for both of them. When they travel, they must make arrangements in advance, such as reserving accommodation. In contrast, with their forest house, if they wake up in the morning and feel like visiting it, they can be ready to go right away and arrive by lunchtime that same day.

The husband enjoys music and alcohol. He dreamed of immersing himself in them surrounded by nature, spending a carefree evening until late at night, cooking, rambling on about this and that, while being moved by beautiful, quality sound.

That is what he told the architectural designer at morinoie. The designer came up with a design that featured an integrated kitchen and counter. The counter table was rounded to encircle the kitchen, allowing for natural eye contact between the cook and the people sharing the table. There was even a shelf above the kitchen to place speakers.

His dream had come true.

In the beginning, they were just happy and visited there every week, more often in winter than in summer. When it snows, it’s more than likely that one of them will say, “Shall we head to Karuizawa?” to enjoy the snowy landscapes. But conversely, if they decide to stay in for the day, they will often gaze out the window at the view.

The good thing about this layout is that they can eat and drink while cleaning up, not just while cooking. They can wash the plates one after another, leaving only the drink and snacks at the end. In their Tokyo house, the table and kitchen are far apart, which can be awkward. But in their forest house, they are close together, so it is easy. They would rather spend time in a good situation. And at the end of it all, they can just put the glasses away quickly and go to bed right away.

At the outset, the wife will be there with her husband, watching a movie, but usually, the husband is alone by the end. In the dense darkness, the crackling of dropping the needle on an analogue record mingles with the crackling from the wood stove. He just sits there, not doing anything but flipping through the pages of a book and occasionally sipping from his glass.
